Science Laboratories renovations

The Education Department approached our college and offered to undertake a major renovation of our large Science room for free, but we managed to get the department officials to instead use the monies to renovate our two smaller laboratories for the same cost.

Unfortunately, this meant that there were massive changes to the school timetable starting late last term and finishing in Week 7 of this term. The Library had to be quarantined for Science classes and then almost every teacher had to teach in a different classroom with their students for 1 period each week, so as to accommodate the resettling of Science classes.

A massive thank you to all staff and students for their patience and understanding as just about everyone in the college was affected since we had to find temporary homes for over 20 classes each week.

Mrs Farrar in the college's Library can now confidently say that she is able to teach Science if she wants to, as she had to listen to two separate science lessons being delivered almost every period for 10 weeks!

Thank you once again to everyone and the new Science labs look fantastic!

Year 9.1 English ‘Scribblers Festival’

Students from Year 9.1 English had the opportunity to attend an exciting excursion to the annual Scribblers Festival at Subiaco Arts Centre on the 14th of September 2022. They had an amazing time hearing from various local authors and illustrators about the process of creating a wide range of texts - both fiction and non-fiction.

First, students heard from George Ivanoff, a science enthusiast who uses the theme of fight or flight in his non-fiction series, Survival Guides, and various choose-your-own adventure stories to keep readers engaged and in suspense. We also heard from HM Waugh who explained the inspiration for her adventure novel, Evacuation Road, that being her experience of being kidnapped twice in South America - this really got the students excited!

The visual artists in the class were not left disappointed as they got to learn about the illustrative process of creating a graphic novel from Aśka, a quantum physicist turned comic artist, and her passion to spread the importance of visual storytelling. Karen Ginnane, author of the Time Catchers series, taught students how to add an element of the unexpected in their stories.

I would like to take this opportunity to praise students for being so engaged and respectful throughout the day. Our students were complimented by the team at the Scribblers Festival for their good behaviour and for asking good questions of the authors. All in all, it was a fantastic time and not only did the students enjoy themselves, but I also enjoyed myself very much too!

Year 9 CREEC Science Excursion

On Thursday 15 September, the 9.1 science class went to the Kent St Weir and engaged in a little water quality testing and checking out the macroinvertebrates that live in that part of the river.

As well as the fun and interest in catching tiny shrimps, water beetles and using water-quality monitors to measure pH, oxygen levels and salinity, the students learned about species of animals and plants that prefer fresh water to the saltier condition of the estuary, and why a lot of fresh water runoff sounds good, but can lead to erosion and murkiness of the water.

The pace of learning was relaxed, we got there via a pleasant walk and the students got to play on the swings and slides afterwards. A few minor complaints about the cost of food at the café, but most students were clever enough to take their own on the day.

Year 6 Journey to Australia Project

Year 6 students have worked hard in presenting their shoebox suitcase project. Students have developed their historical inquiry skills by investigating the different immigration schemes in Australia during the 1900s which brought a range of migrants to Australia. They learned about the people who came to Australia and why they came. Students completed a range of independent, group, and whole class activities to explore ideas, pose questions, reflect upon new understandings and consider the bigger picture of immigrants.

Primary Learning Journey

Our Primary Learning Journey was held on Wednesday, 7 September. It was wonderful to see so many families visiting the classrooms and having such positive conversations with their children. The students were so proud of their work and enjoyed sharing their achievements with their family. Thank you to our wonderful staff who put in a great deal of time and effort to ensure their students' work was out on display. Your classrooms looked amazing! A big thank you also to our parents that completed the online survey.

VacSwim

VacSwim offers swimming lessons for children aged 5 to 17 years during the summer school holidays. Lessons are conducted at pools and beach locations across WA.

Lesson Times

Arriving on Time

School begins at 8:40am every day during term time. The College has a school-wide standardized lesson structure that is used to introduce new learning. The beginning of lessons is a time that the purpose of the learning is explained along with how and why the students will be engaging in the learning. The first lesson of the day is of critical importance in primary classes where highly structured literacy lessons are delivered every morning. Students that arrive late to class will miss this key part of the lesson and will then struggle to join in with what is going on. The interruption created by the late entry to the room also distracts the teacher and other students. Parents are asked to ensure that children arrive at school early enough so that lessons can begin at 8:40am.

Picking up Students

Our College finishes at 2:50pm every day except Wednesday when our finishing time is 2:35pm. Please ensure that the pick-up of students is made promptly at this time. In the event of a delay, we ask that you contact the College to inform the staff of the delay. This prevents students from becoming anxious and a lot of time being used by staff trying to make contact.

Food Allergies

At Cannington Community College we have a number of students with life threatening food allergies, particularly peanut/nut, eggs.

What does this mean for these students?

Even a small trace of nut, peanut, nut/peanut or egg product may trigger a severe allergic reaction called Anaphylaxis, which attacks the immune system leading potentially to death within minutes.

This reaction can happen by taste, touch and sometimes can be airborne. All of these students have access to an adrenaline injection in the form of an Epipen, which can save lives.

Cannington CC works with parents/carers to support students in developing an awareness of their allergies and what foods to avoid. Students are encouraged not to share food and to always check with a parent/adult/teacher if unsure at any time.

How can you help to keep CCC students with allergies safe?

Please help us by not including peanut or any nut products in your child's lunchbox if possible. This includes peanut butter and Nutella. Please avoid products with any nuts/peanuts listed as an ingredient.

Look for alternatives such as the delicious and moist Scooby Doo Chocolate Mud Spread and others that are available in the Health Food Section at the supermarket.

Please consider what you are sending for birthday treats to share with the class, checking there are no nut products included.

Explain about food allergy to your child and encourage the ‘no food sharing' rule.

The school canteen does not serve products containing peanut/nuts.
