END OF SEMESTER ACTIVITIES

The end of semester at Cannington Community College provides many high energy, enjoyable cultural experiences for your children. On Friday we welcomed Yirra Yaakin who performed twice (K-6 and 7-10) for the start of our NAIDOC week. I would like to congratulate Lynne Makin, Lee-Ann Lawrence, Jo Pearson, and the entire NAIDOC committee for their superb organisation and dealing with last minute changes at the assembly. Our students spoke and performed beautifully, and I know there were many proud moments. There will be more activities during the week, student performances and finally, a reward day on Friday in the primary area with the Mucky Duck Bush Band performing in the Under-cover area. Please check Connect notices for details.

REPORTING TO PARENTS

Reports go home this week. Please remember that there will be an opportunity for families of our secondary students to meet with subject teachers in Term 3 (Wednesday, 3 August - See article below for more information). Similarly, in the primary area, parents may wish to make an appointment in Term 3 for more information about student progress. In forthcoming newsletters there will be more information about the primary Learning Journey in Term 3.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

We now head into the holidays after what has been a semester of continual disruption and unpredictability. Many students and staff have experienced the ills of the COVID19; and the emotional and physical strains that this places on everyone. Hopefully we are nearing the ‘tail-end’ of the pandemic, and a sense of normality will be with us soon enough. Everyone has coped with the disruptions relatively well, and I thank our entire community for your patience and preparedness in getting your children to school as often as possible.

OUR AMAZING STAFF

I would like to sincerely thank our very hard-working teachers and support staff who have probably had one of the most difficult semesters on record. There has been unprecedented internal relief that our teachers have had to do - this means that when we are unable to find a relief teacher, they had to give up their teaching preparation time. This then leads to extra time preparing over and above what is considered normal. Thank you so much, staff.

KIND JULY

Adversity tends to bring out the very best in us all. When we think about fire, floods, pandemics and so on, we revert to our essence of what it means to be truly human, and the core of the kind nature that is known as our humanity. I would like to issue a challenge to the community of Cannington - to participate in Kind July. This means that we can choose to do random acts of kindness each day. It’s as easy as breathing and is instinctive in humans – we just forget this from time to time. Social pressures and social media encourage our self-centred focus, and we end up comparing ourselves to others. This takes us away from the compassionate approach to others, keeping social harmony and being kind to one another. So how much effort does it take to be kind? Not much.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Smiling or waving back at a child who does it first
  • We can make links between our College values and kindness to others, ourselves and the community
  • Putting rubbish in a bin - being kind to the environment
  • Making a cup of tea for a friend
  • Listening
  • Being mindful of your words to another person
  • Drinking water to be kind to your body
  • Become a Kindness Champion - spread it like confetti!

AUSTRALIA’S KINDNESS BRUNCH

Other considerations for Kind July could include inviting friends over for Australia’s Kindness Brunch on the weekend of 16 and 17 July 2022. I have a few people I am inviting – who may be a bit lonely. I am doing this instead of Christmas in July. You can get involved and register for this event online:

Semester One Reports

Student reports for Semester One will be given to all students today. If students are sick and not at school, parents may make arrangements to collect their report from the front office.

How will I know that my student is doing OK?

On the front of the report there is an explanation of the report. It is important that parents read this information because the grading system being used A, B, C, D, E relates to student achievement for each Learning Area and is not aligned with the common understanding of grading A, B, C, D, E. Teachers will be in contact with parents if a student’s grades are below the expected level for their year.

A - Excellent: The student demonstrates excellent achievement of what is expected for this year level.
B - High: The student demonstrates high achievement of what is expected for this year level.
C - Satisfactory: The student demonstrates satisfactory achievement of what is expected for this year level.
D - Limited: The student demonstrates limited achievement of what is expected for this year level.
E - Very Low: The student demonstrates very low achievement of what is expected for this year level.

Canteen News

As of term 3 the canteen will not be providing straws with drinks as the Western Australia Government will now enforce the stage 1 ban on single use of plastics from 1 July 2022. The cost of paper straws is over double the price of plastic, so it is not viable for the canteen to provide these. If your child needs a straw, you should send a paper one to school in their bag or provide your child with a reusable one that they can keep.

Due to so many price rises we have had to increase our prices on certain products. We will be doing a reshuffle of our menu to try and keep the cost down as much as possible. However, there will be an increase on water which will be going to $1.50, small drinks $2.50, large $3.50.

Please view the attached link for menu changes.

Thank you.

Year 6 Science with Mr Twigg

On Monday 19 June, the year 6 students went to the high school Science lab to learn about Physical and Chemical Changes. Mr Twigg mixed zinc and hydrochloric acid to make hydrogen. Students were able to make sherbet using citric acid and sodium bicarbonate. To make a physical change, students dissolved salt in water and are waiting for the water to evaporate and leave the solid crystals.

Winter Carnival

On Wednesday the 22nd of June, all the year 5 & 6’s went to the winter carnival. There were 3 different sports to choose from, they were Soccer, Netball and AFL. There were 7 schools involved and they consisted of Cannington Community College, Bannister Creek, Beckenham, Queen’s Park, Brookman, Wilson and Gibbs Street.

For our soccer team, our coach was Miss Keys, she was an amazing coach. The only challenging problem was the weather because there was so much rain. There were 2 soccer teams. Team A and team B. The best soccer player in Team A was AJ and the best soccer player for Team B was Jesty.

For netball, we had two teams and we had two coaches. The coaches were Miss Langley and Miss Craigie. The weather on that day was very challenging to play in because the court was so wet and we would sometimes slip. Each coach picked the best player on their team. The best player on team A was Jackie and the best player on team B was Mikail.

Zero2Hero Day

On Friday, 17 June the students and staff from Cannington Community College and Cannington Community Educational Support Centre raised $395.00 with gold coin donations, free dress or dress as our heroes to support the Zero2Hero Association in promoting youth mental health. Students also enjoyed a pancake breakfast which was prepared by the College staff.

Zero2Hero day is an annual event at the College to raise awareness of the importance of having open conversation around youth mental health. It gives young people the confidence to stand up and speak out to support their friends when they may be experiencing anxiety, stress, bullying, depression, self-harm or suicidal thoughts. Students are encouraged to seek support from the College Student Services team if they are struggling or are concerned about their friends.

Zero2Hero is a WA-based incorporated association dedicated to increasing the understanding of mental health issues and the awareness of mental health services among children and young people using a number of support programs.

Year 7 Zoo Excursion

The Year 7.1 Science students visited Perth Zoo on Tuesday, 21 June to extend what they have been learning in Biology this term.

While at Perth Zoo, students were able to participate in a ‘Fantastic Beasts’ activity presented by zoo staff members. Students were able to practice drawing food webs and food chains, and classifying animals using knowledge that they have learnt at school. Students were also able to observe a range of animals from the African Savannah, Asian Rainforest, Wetlands and Australian Wildlife and were able to identify their correct species name, the environment they live in and identify adaptation that these animals possess to enable them to thrive in that particular environment.

Overall, the students had a great day out and extended their learning about the different animals. Students displayed impeccable behaviour and were wonderful ambassadors for our college. Many thanks to Ms Paton and Mr Chedid for conducting the excursion.

School Based Immunisation Program – using VaccinateWA

The School Based Immunisation Program (SBIP) is a well-established service that offers National Immunisation Program immunisations to students in Years 7 and 10.

This year, the SBIP will also offer COVID-19 vaccinations to eligible students in Years 7 through to 12 at selected schools as part of the regular schedule of immunisations based within schools.

The VaccinateWA system is now to be used by parents/carers to complete the vaccination consent form in order to consent to their children/dependents receiving vaccinations whilst at school.

(Note: VaccinateWA is not being used to book appointments for the School Based Immunisation Program).

To provide consent for vaccination, the first step is to register the child/dependant on VaccinateWA. Log into your VaccinateWA account and follow the steps to “Add or manage dependants”. If you do not have a VaccinateWA account, you will need to create one for yourself first.

Step by step information for using VaccinateWA is available on the HealthyWA website. Please call 13 COVID (13 26843) if you have any technical issues with VaccinateWA.

If you are unable to complete the online consent form - and you have not already handed in a paper consent form – the school will have forms available for you to use. If the information you provide needs to be clarified, you may be contacted by a staff member from the vaccination team.

If you have already completed and returned a paper consent form, the SBIP team are currently uploading the information into the VaccinateWA system. This process may take several weeks, and you will receive an email confirming once it has been done.

Arriving on Time

School begins at 8:40am every day during term time. The College has a school-wide standardized lesson structure that is used to introduce new learning. The beginning of lessons is a time that the purpose of the learning is explained along with how and why the students will be engaging in the learning. The first lesson of the day is of critical importance in primary classes where highly structured literacy lessons are delivered every morning. Students that arrive late to class will miss this key part of the lesson, and will then struggle to join in with what is going on. The interruption created by the late entry to the room also distracts the teacher and other students. Parents are asked to ensure that children arrive at school early enough so that lessons can begin at 8:40am.

Picking up Students

Our College finishes at 2:50pm every day except Wednesday when our finishing time is 2:35pm. Please ensure that the pick-up of students is made promptly at this time. In the event of a delay, we ask that you contact the College to inform the staff of the delay. This prevents students from becoming anxious and a lot of time being used by staff trying to make contact.

Food Allergies

At Cannington Community College we have a number of students with life threatening food allergies, particularly peanut/nut, eggs.

What does this mean for these students?

Even a small trace of nut, peanut, nut/peanut or egg product may trigger a severe allergic reaction called Anaphylaxis, which attacks the immune system leading potentially to death within minutes.

This reaction can happen by taste, touch and sometimes can be airborne. All of these students have access to an adrenaline injection in the form of an Epipen, which can save lives.

Cannington CC works with parents/carers to support students in developing an awareness of their allergies and what foods to avoid. Students are encouraged not to share food and to always check with a parent/adult/teacher if unsure at any time.

How can you help to keep CCC students with allergies safe?

Please help us by not including peanut or any nut products in your child's lunchbox if possible. This includes peanut butter and Nutella. Please avoid products with any nuts/peanuts listed as an ingredient.

Look for alternatives such as the delicious and moist Scooby Doo Chocolate Mud Spread and others that are available in the Health Food Section at the supermarket.

Please consider what you are sending for birthday treats to share with the class, checking there are no nut products included.

Explain about food allergy to your child and encourage the ‘no food sharing' rule.

The school canteen does not serve products containing peanut/nuts.

Thank you for your support.
