P&C Meeting
The P&C Meeting will be held today, (Wednesday, 15 June) at 1:30pm in the Staff Room. All parents welcome.
Important update regarding Reporting to Parents
As you are aware, COVID-19 continues to impact our school community and presents us with challenges in managing both student and staff attendance. I am pleased that together, we can make the best of this situation to ensure your child’s continued learning.
The Semester 1 reporting to parents format will look different to what we have done previously as a result of interruption to programs. The report will include the A to E grades (or equivalent 5-point scale) for required learning areas. Information regarding your child’s attitude, behaviour and effort will continue to be reported, although comments will not be present on this report. Should you wish for additional information on your child’s progress, you will have the opportunity to discuss this at a parent/teacher meeting. Please contact the relevant member of staff at the College.
Thank you for your continued support and encouragement as we work together to provide the best learning opportunities for our students. As we progress through the year, I’ll keep you updated with any new information.
For your convenience your child will be given a printed copy of the Semester 1 report during Week 10. I have enjoyed reading about the progress and achievement of all of our students from K-10, and I encourage you to discuss this report with your child.
When discussing the report, you may wish to cover some of the following ideas:
- Areas of improvement and growth that you have noticed;
- Areas where improvement can be made;
- Setting positively stated goals for improvement in an area of the curriculum;
- Setting goals to improve attendance; and
- Consider ways to improve attitude, behaviour and effort in class.
Please note that the printing of reports will cease after Semester 1, 2022 as we move to an email delivery format in Semester 2 this year. This will enable the College to adopt more sustainable practices, save paper and costs.
It is important that your email contact details are kept up to date so that you receive the report on time.
If you have any queries about the move to emailed reports or would like to discuss your child’s report, please contact the College on 9351 2400 in Term 3.

Semester One Reports
Student reports for Semester One will be given to all students to take home on Wednesday, 29 June. If students are sick and not at school on that day, parents may make arrangements to collect their report from the front office.
How will I know that my student is doing OK?
On the front of the report there is an explanation of the report. It is important that parents read this information because the grading system being used A, B, C, D, E relates to student achievement for each Learning Area and is not aligned with the common understanding of grading A, B, C, D, E. Teachers will be in contact with parents if a student’s grades are below the expected level for their year.
A - Excellent: The student
demonstrates excellent achievement of what is expected for this year
level.
B - High: The student demonstrates high
achievement of what is expected for this year level.
C – Satisfactory: The student demonstrates
satisfactory achievement of what is expected for this year level.
D - Limited: The student demonstrates limited
achievement of what is expected for this year level.
E - Very Low: The student demonstrates very low
achievement of what is expected for this year level.
School Position Report for Semester 1
(Pre-primary to Year 10)
Parents can request a School Position Report for Semester 1. The additional printout provides written information that clearly shows your child’s achievement in the subjects studied compared to that of other children in the child’s peer group at the college. The information shows you the number of students in each of the achievement levels A to E. These reports are not available for Kindergarten.
If you would like this additional report for Semester 1, please sign and return the slip below. Slips must be returned to the College office no later than Wednesday, 22 June.
Secondary – Parent and Teacher Evening
On Wednesday, 3 August we will be hosting a secondary years’ Parent and Teacher evening. Parents/Carers will be able to book a 10-minute meeting with individual teachers to discuss semester one reports. Bookings may be made for times between 5:30pm and 7:30pm.
Parents/Carers will be sent a link via email/connect towards the end of term 2 with instructions on how to access the online booking system.
You will still be able to call the College reception to arrange interview times if you prefer.

Zero2Hero Day
Zero2Hero Day is this Friday, 17 June. We will be having a whole-school pancake breakfast from 8:00-8:30am. This event provides young people with a space to communicate about mental health and reach out for support if it’s needed. The day encourages students to dress up, stand up and speak up for youth mental health – dress up as their favourite superhero or somebody that inspires them, stand up for themselves and their friends, and speak up about issues they are facing.
Please bring a gold coin donation for this worthy cause.
College Uniform Policy
As we are half way through the term and winter is approaching, we would like to take this opportunity to revisit the uniform expectations. Uniform is an important part of the College identity, it reinforces who we are as a community and helps allow students to feel pride in our school. In the last week we have had a number of interpretations of what is, and what is not acceptable uniform. We would like to clarify our expectations for students and parents. Please ensure that your child has the appropriately approved uniform (Navy Blue only). To access our Uniform List view the link below.

Kindergarten 2023 Enrolments
We are now taking enrolments for Kindergarten 2023. You will need to apply to enrol your child by 22 July 2022. Children who were born between 1 July 2018 and 30 June 2019 can enrol into the kindergarten classes starting in February 2023. Parents will need to complete an application for enrolment form and return all relevant documentation to the front office.
Geology Excursion
The Academic Extension students in Year 8 visited the University of Western Australia (UWA) last Friday as part of their Earth Science learning program. The students had been learning all about the different types of rocks and minerals in our world and UWA provided an up-close experience to consolidate the concepts that the students had learnt. UWA was a great source of information as we were able to observe different rock samples and identify whether they were Sedimentary, Igneous or Metamorphic.
The day went well beginning with a tour of the UWA facilities by university student volunteers who were able to share insights on university life, as well as show us some of the hidden locations and history of the UWA campus. The students then entered the Geology building where they were able to sort through a vast amount of rock samples to create a huge rock cycle.
After consolidating their knowledge of different rocks and minerals in the form of a rock cycle, the students were then able to explore the geology museum which included many different facts as well as the geology under Cannington Community College!
The students had a great day out and extended their learning about the different rocks and minerals. Many thanks to Mr. Davidson and Teacher Assistant Ms. Crook for conducting the excursion.

GRIP Leadership
On Tuesday, 31 May, alongside 13 other students, we attended the GRIP Leadership conference. There we watched a video and listened to a brief introduction about the program.
First, we played word scrabble, each of the four-letter words corresponded to leadership. In our booklets, we learnt about an acronym called STEP.
S-serve others
T-take initiative
E-exemplify school values
P-purpose
Once our break finished, we watched a play about stepping up integrity. Next, we learnt about another acronym.
S-serve others
T-tell the truth
E-encourage others to do what’s right
P-persist
To raise the standard of teamwork the first step is to seek ideas from others. The next step is to select the most suitable ideas. Step three select the most suitable people to make it happen. To end the day off with a hit, we played ‘follow the leader’. Six people came up on stage and we had to copy their favourite dance move.
It would be an understatement to say it was a great experience. It was so much fun and we would love to go again.

North Metropolitan TAFE
In semester 2, North Metropolitan TAFE will be running courses to prepare students for work in schools and elsewhere. Since 2017, these courses have been a big success. We have had students employed as gardeners, cleaners, school officers, education assistants and librarians.
We have now increased our focus to offer SIS and Integris training and this course is available to Perth students on campus and country students via remote learning.
For more information, view the link below.
Cameras at School Events
Parents are advised that they may not publish images or videos made at school events. Parents individually give permission for images to be used by College staff in College publications, and we keep a current list of students for whom we don’t have permission. Parents may not assume permission to record and then publish images of other parents’ children. It is important that we respect individuals’ privacy.
School Playground Equipment
The use of the playground equipment is not permitted outside of school hours for safety and insurance reasons. All children should arrive at school by 8:30am and be picked up promptly at the end of school at 2.50pm or at 2.35pm on Wednesday.
Driver Reminder
Drivers are reminded of the need to be very cautious in the College car parks and Wharf Street, particularly at peak times (start and end of the school day). There are many children and adult pedestrians in the vicinity at these times and vehicle traffic is quite heavy. The posted speed limit (40 km/h) is the allowable maximum – but it may still be too high for the conditions. Drivers must always drive to the prevailing conditions. It is our job to control our vehicles safely at all times. Particular care is needed when turning from or onto Wharf Street.
Going to school every day really matters
At school, teachers plan programs in a sequence so children build on skills and activities from one day to the next.
Developing the habit of going to school regularly from Kindergarten is vitally important so children don’t miss out on important ideas and skills they need for future learning.
You can help make every day matter by:
- Talking positively about school so your child is happy to go each day.
- Showing interest in what your child is doing at school and talking with the teacher about what you can do at home.
- Setting play dates to help your child make friends.
- Teaching your child how to share and take turns.
- Arriving at school and collecting your child from school on time.
- Making sure your child gets nutritious meals each day and enough sleep each night.
- Making appointments with doctors, dentists and specialists after school or during school holidays.
- Taking family holidays during school holidays and not during term time.
If your child is unwell and unable to go to school, telephone or text the school to let the teacher know. If your child misses a day, talk with the teacher to find out how you can help your child catch up. If you are having difficulty getting your child to school, talk with the teacher.
Taking an interest in what your child does at school, helping in class and being part of the school community shows your child how much you value school.
